Human beings are healthier if they spend a lifetime moving and exercising. However, many aspects of modern day life are threatening this need. People largely do inactive or sedentary jobs and developments in technology have meant that more physical domestic roles have been automated. Think about the role of washing machines, hoovers and lawn mowers which have saved time but have also led to a reduced energy expenditure in the home. Then there’s transport developments such as the growth in car ownership. In combination of these factors many people are less active than they should be and need to plan for exercise to be part of their life. It is therefore necessary to know what the activity guidelines are for people in order to judge one’s own activity level and to plan for change if necessary.
